I have always been the kind of person to study something in depth before getting my feet wet. A lot of people call me obsessional, but I don't see it that way. As I said before, I read a lot of health fitness articles, but not all of them stuck. I was surprised because the ones that made the most impact were the ones with the most general and common sense rules. For example, my favorite health fitness article was about exercising. It said that the biggest mistake that people make is to find overambitious exercise routines based on someone else's idea of the perfect exercises. It advised me to come up with a routine that involve activities that I actually enjoyed instead of activities that I thought would develop the most muscle mass or cardiovascular strength. Knowing this, I was able to incorporate bicycle riding and swimming – two activities that I absolutely love – into a good workout.

I also read a health fitness article that told me the relationship between eating habits and exercising. This is really important for me because I also had bad eating habits in addition to being too sedentary. They tell me that eating the right foods would give me the energy that I would need to work out and stay active. Wouldn't you know it – once I started changing my diet, I did have more impetus to get out and start running around.

It seems that there are so many charitable causes that you cannot begin to give to all of them. My husband and I give to our church and the charities that it sponsors. That is the bulk of our cash donations. We also give to the food shelf and donate clothing and house hold items to the homeless and needy. It was not until my sister developed cancer that I thought about donating to medical research.

Eighteen months ago my sister called me to let me know that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. This came as a huge surprise to both of us because there is no history in our family. She is an x-ray technician so she is very aware of the importance of getting mammograms and she has been getting one every year since she was forty years old. It was during her annual mammogram that the lump showed up on the test. The doctors told her all of her options and shared with her that they thought she would be a good candidate for a new treatment. There have been many advancements in breast cancer research and they wanted to try a new chemotherapy on her. Since my sister is in the medical field she has always had an interest in new research. She was willing to try the treatments. If they did not work they would remove her breast. They explained that she would not be risking the cancer spreading because the type she had was slow to develop, and they felt that it was at a very early stage. The breast cancer research that developed the treatments they were to use on her was done at the Mayo Clinic.

I called our nephew who is a pharmaceutical researcher at the Mayo and asked him if he could find additional information about this particular breast cancer research. He told me that a friend of his was working on the breast cancer research team and he could find out what type of results they are getting with the patients that have been taking the treatments. He called me a few days later and shared that the results have been very good. He also thought that it was a plus for my sister that she was chosen for the treatments, because they are only taking candidates that have a good chance of responding to the treatments. The breast cancer research project has been working on this cure for over ten years, so they need to show great results to keep the project going.

My sister had her first treatment seventeen months ago and the lump and all signs of cancer are gone. She is in a long term follow up group so they are checking her often for any changes. She did not have to have the surgery and she is back to doing all the activities that she had done previously.

If everyone in the UK had a condensing boiler our annual carbon dioxide emissions would be reduced by 17.5 million tonnes, and it would also result in a saving of 1.3 billion on energy bills every year. Condensing boilers are the most efficient heating appliance in an energy-conscious climate. Condensing boilers are most efficient when operating in condensing mode. Even in none condensing mode they are more efficient than traditional boilers.

Cotswold Living - A Moment in Time

As a heating engineer, I travel around the beautiful area of England called the Cotswolds. Honey coloured stone buildings hundreds of years old which draws tourists from all over the world. Not just tourists, but foreigners who come to retire here, to them its a dream come true.

One day last week whilst traveling through a village called Guiting Power, I noticed a table and two chairs adorning the frontage of the local Post Office with a notice offering tea and coffee. Hundreds of these village Post Offices are under threat of closure which would be a total disaster for the local communities. It's a strange thing I thought....having driven past this Post Office hundreds of times and never been inside.

Well, on my way back through the village I decided to pull over and treat myself to a cup of coffee. I parked up opposite the Post Office and entered the store. Inside was a woman and from her accent she was from America. She politely asked for two coffees to be drunk outside in the sunshine. "No problem" replied the postmaster "will bring them out to you". Dam! I thought....that's where I wanted to sit and top-up the tan. I asked for a coffee also, which was freshly ground and smelling good. "Are they tourists" I asked the postmaster? "Oh no, the lady owns a house in the village, she is retired."

I walked outside with my coffee and sat in my vehicle. Windows down to let the fresh air in, the American lady and her companion started talking politics. She wore dark sunglasses to protect her eyes from the gleaming sun. It was nice just to sit and listen to others points of view, how the world is and how it could be improved. The moment became serene and peaceful with a sense of inner harmony. I looked down and saw my cup was empty...time to go. Pity, I return the cup and thank the postmaster.

So, what did I learn from that moment in time!. Well, no one knows when it may happen, but to break away from routine and try something different can be rewarding, just taking time out for coffee as in my case can capture moments in time that will last a life time. Less rushing around and passing by is the moral of the story. Enjoy what's around you first!.

Ok, on to my last job of the day. Some damsel in distress with no heating or hot water in a village not to far away. A small village where Kate Winslett (the actress) has made a home. The Cotswolds is England at it's best, I guess you could call me a lucky guy.

The country has regional differences and some national favorites. The main meal is taken at mid-day, although smaller lunches and bigger evening meals are increasingly popular. Vegetables are sometimes eaten as side dishes or as part of stews and soups. Fried onions and asparagus are very popular. Salmon is also a common dish.
